Beyond the novelty of seeing your location from a\\n different perspective, aerial photography quickly became a valuable \\ntool for surveillance, cartography, and for documenting historical land \\nuse. Photographers found that by taking overlapping photos or many at \\ndifferent angles, the images could be combined to show depth and height \\nof landforms and the built environment.
\\n\\n
Aerial photography became a very useful tool for war efforts to show \\nenemy movements and defensive positions. Regionally, national guards \\nsuch as the 116th Observation Squadron (also known as the Photo \\nSection), 41st Division Aviation of the Washington National Guard, the \\nlikeliest group to have taken the photos in this collection, were \\nengaged in aerial photography for observation and reconnaissance during \\nWorld War 1. After the war, aerial photography turned invaluable for \\nstudying the landscape from viewing soil erosion, mapping rivers, \\nshowing forestation, and to supporting civil works planning, \\nconstruction and other improvement projects. New Deal programs during \\nthe Great Depression, such as the Grand Coulee Dam and irrigation \\nprojects along the Columbia River, were also documented by the 116th \\nsection. The buildup to the start of WWII put a halt to their civil \\nphotographic projects and the 116th joined federal active duty on \\nSeptember 16th, 1940.
\\n\\n
\\n
\\n        \\n            \\n        \\n
A1131
\\n
\\n
\\n\\n
Aerial photographs have been taken by commercial as well as state and\\n national governmental sources, such as the U.S. Geological Service, \\nBureau of Land Management, National Park Service, and all branches of \\nthe military. Advances in geospatial technology have vastly improved the\\n amount of data that can be collected and interpreted through aerial \\nphotography.
\", \"distribution\": [{\"@type\": \"dcat:Distribution\", \"accessURL\": \"https://geocatalog-uidaho.hub.arcgis.com/documents/uidaho::idaho-historical-aerial-photographs\", \"format\": \"Web Page\", \"mediaType\": \"text/html\", \"title\": \"ArcGIS Hub Dataset\"}, {\"@type\": \"dcat:Distribution\", \"accessURL\": \"https://www.lib.uidaho.edu/digital/aerial/\", \"format\": \"ArcGIS GeoServices REST API\", \"mediaType\": \"application/json\", \"title\": \"ArcGIS GeoService\"}], \"identifier\": \"https://www.arcgis.com/home/item.html?id=58dd287110914cab8e338c0459b84d4b\", \"issued\": \"2022-04-07T17:28:57.000Z\", \"keyword\": [\"aerial photo\", \"air photo\", \"oblique photograph\"], \"landingPage\": \"https://geocatalog-uidaho.hub.arcgis.com/documents/uidaho::idaho-historical-aerial-photographs\", \"license\": \"Materials from the University of Idaho Library's Digital Collections are made available online for research purposes.
