The map area is located in the foothills of the Endicott Mountains. It is one of a series of areas selected for detailed mapping to document important structural and stratigraphic relationships along the east-central Brooks Range mountain front. The map delineates key stratigraphic and structural elements important to understanding Alaska's North Slope's oil and gas potential. The complete report, geodatabase, and ESRI fonts and style files are available from the DGGS website: http://doi.org/10.14509/19781.
<purpose>Alaska's North Slope is largely covered by tundra and past exploration has relied heavily on expensive seismic data. The geology exposed along the northern mountain front provides much-needed insight into the evolution of the petroleum system. Many of the geologic relationships delimited by our mapping can be projected into the subsurface and are directly relevant to ongoing exploration. In addition to relevant oil and gas issues, detailed geologic mapping in the foothills of the Endicott Mountains investigates several important scientific questions related to deposition of the Brookian Megasequence and evolution of the Colville foreland basin.</purpose><supplinf>This geodatabase is organized according to the AK GeMS mapping schema Hendricks, M.D., Ekberg, P.G., Athey, J.E., Wyatt, W.C., Willingham, A.L., and Naibert, T.J., 2021, AK GeMS data dictionary: A description of the Alaska geologic mapping schema: Alaska Division of Geological & Geophysical Surveys Miscellaneous Publication 170, 10 p. https://doi.org/10.14509/30669. Geologists recorded observations on 1:63,360-scale topographic base maps and/or similarly scaled aerial photographs. Field notes and rock samples were collected at stations throughout the map area. Locations of sample sites and orientation measurement stations were confirmed using handheld GPS units. Geologists' observations were analyzed relative to the interpretations of previous workers and compiled onto a single mylar base map. Samples were collected for petrographic, age, and/or geochemical analysis. The surficial geologic mapping presented in this publication is a refinement of published, 1:250,000 scale mapping. The original acetate overlays used to produce the Hamilton, 1979, 1:250,000 scale map were individually scanned and orthorectified, using Orthomapper, and then georeferenced and superimposed, via ArcGIS, over orthorectified, photomosaiced and georeferenced 1:63,360 scale aerial photographs. The surficial unit contacts were then refined to reflect the 1:63,360 scale of this map. Areas which warranted further study were checked in the field. The conceptual framework for the geology incorporates key ideas from preexisting literature with new data and interpretations developed from field mapping and analytical findings. The accompanying map or report provides a comprehensive bibliographic reference list of prior work used to identify and delineate rock units and structural elements.</procdesc><srcused>Brosge, W.P. and others, 1979</srcused><srcused>Chapman, R.M. and others, 1964</srcused><srcused>Hamilton, T.D., 1979</srcused><srcused>Mull, C.G. and others, 2009</srcused><srcused>Patton, W.W., Jr. and Tailleur, I.L., 1964</srcused><srcused>Peapples, P.R. and others, 2007</srcused><procdate>2009</procdate></procstep><procstep><procdesc>GIS analysis and digital cartography - This data distribution package's geologic and geographic features were organized and attributed according to the AK GeMS geologic mapping schema.
