PFV52 was computed from data from the AVHRR instruments on board NOAA's\r\n polar orbiting satellite series using an entirely modernized system based on\r\n SeaDAS. This system incorporates several key changes from Versions 5.0 and 5.1\r\n of Pathfinder, including the use of an entirely new land mask, a modified grid,\r\n and the inclusion of sea ice, wind speed, and aerosol ancillary data to support\r\n the use of the SST data. Importantly, PFV52 data are provided in netCDF-4\r\n (classic model, with internal compression and chunking) and are nearly 100%\r\n compliant with the GHRSST Data Specification Version 2.0 for L3C products. These\r\n data deviate from that standard only in that sses_bias, sses_standard_deviation,\r\n and sst_dtime variables are empty. PFV52 data were collected through the\r\n operational periods of the NOAA-7 through NOAA-18 Polar Operational\r\n Environmental Satellites (POES), and are available for 1981 through 2012. This SST data collection is\r\n intended primarily for climate related applications and studies and is produced\r\n with partial support from the NOAA Climate Data Record Program. The Pathfinder\r\n Version 5.2 data set follows the international format, content and metadata\r\n standard defined by the Group for High Resolution Sea Surface Temperature\r\n (GHRSST) in the GHRSST Data Specification Version 2.0 (GDS2.0). These data\r\n deviate from that standard only in that sses_bias, sses_standard_deviation, and\r\n sst_dtime variables are empty. The method used to determine these clock\r\n correction factors is presented below. The clock aboard a\r\n given satellite drifts continually at a relatively constant\r\n rate (e.g., for NOAA-14, ~9msday-1) compared to the\r\n reference clock on Earth. Because of this drift, the\r\n NOAA/NESDIS Satellite Operation Control Center periodically\r\n sends a command to the satellite to reset the on-board clock\r\n to a new baseline thereby eliminating the accumulation of a\r\n large time offset error between the Earth and satellite\r\n clocks.To correct for clock drift between these resets,\r\n correction factors were determined from a database of\r\n satellite clock time and Earth time offsets collected at the\r\n RSMAS High Resolution Picture Transmission (HRPT) receiving\r\n station. During HRPT transmission, both the satellite clock\r\n (used to create the embedded time code in each piece) and\r\n the Earth clock are simultaneously available. The clock\r\n correction bias was determined by (1) visual examination of\r\n the Earth/satellite clock differences collected in the\r\n database to locate the precise magnitude and timing of clock\r\n resets performed by the Satellite Operation Control Center\r\n and (2) recorded time differences between the identified\r\n reset periods were then filtered to remove spurious noise,\r\n and regressed against the corresponding satellite time to\r\n determine the clock drift correction. These drift\r\n corrections were then applied to all data time-stamped\r\n during a given reset period. The nominal attitude correction\r\n applied was determined by averaging the absolute attitude of\r\n the spacecraft over many geographic locations and times\r\n along the orbital track. The method used to determine the\r\n absolute attitude of the spacecraft involves matching a\r\n digital coastal outline to a given image and recording the\r\n amount of pitch, yaw, and roll required to make the outline\r\n and land coincide. This method has the advantage that it can\r\n be performed over small geographical distances and is\r\n similar to other techniques which rely on widely separated\r\n geographical control points to anchor the navigation. The\r\n resultant navigation information, output by the SECTOR\r\n procedure for each piece, provides the mapping parameters\r\n needed to convert between the satellite perspective of pixel\r\n and scan line, and Earth-based latitude and longitude\r\n coordinates. The output of this\r\n process is a collection of twice-daily, global Level 3 data\r\n files in HDF4 format. The process requires several important\r\n pieces of information, which are categorized by the following\r\n four overall steps in the Pathfinder processing system (steps\r\n A-D): A. Ingestion, calibration, and navigation of Global Area\r\n Coverage (GAC) data. Sub-steps: a. Calibrate and convert AVHRR\r\n digital counts for channels 1 through 5 to radiances - i. Obtain\r\n AVHRR channels 1 through 5 radiometer count data; ii. Channels 1\r\n and 2 require pre-launch calibration coefficients for linear\r\n counts-to-radiance conversion, followed by a correction for\r\n temporal changes using sensor decay rate data and then a\r\n correction for inter-satellite differences using inter-satellite\r\n standardization data to the NOAA-9 reference, both of which use\r\n Libyan desert target area data; iii. Channels 3, 4, and 5\r\n require both the pre-launch calibration data and onboard\r\n blackbody (space view and sensor base plate) data for non-linear\r\n counts-to-radiance conversion; b. Navigation, Clock, and\r\n Attitude Corrections; i. Satellite clock corrections need Earth\r\n time offset data based on RSMAS High-Resolution Picture\r\n Transmission data; ii. Attitude corrections are made using\r\n coastline comparison data; iii. At this point, navigated,\r\n calibrated albedos/brightness temperatures are available for all\r\n five channels. Note that channels 1-2 are not used in the\r\n Pathfinder SST algorithm, and channel 3 is used only in\r\n assignment of a quality indicator (see step B.d.i.). B. SST\r\n Calculation. Sub-steps: a. Channel 4 and 5 brightness\r\n temperatures are converted to SST in degrees C using the\r\n Pathfinder algorithm, which requires a set of monthly\r\n coefficients; b. These coefficients are derived using the\r\n Pathfinder Buoy Matchup Database. This is a set of in situ buoy\r\n SST observations and collocated AVHRR data; c. In addition, a\r\n first-guess SST field is needed by the algorithm. This\r\n first-guess field is the Reynolds Optimum Interpolation \ufffd-Degree\r\n Daily SST Analysis version 2 (DOISSTv2) product, with inland\r\n values populated from the AVHRR Pathfinder Version 5.0/5.1 daily\r\n climatological SST. (For more information on this reference\r\n field see https://www.ncei.noaa.gov/archive/accession/0071185). Note:\r\n Pathfinder Version 5.0 used the Reynolds Weekly Global Optimally\r\n Interpolated SST Version 2 (OISSTv2); d. Quality Flag Assignment\r\n - i. A Channel 3, 4, and 5 brightness temperature test is\r\n performed. These data are already available from step A.a.iii;\r\n ii. The viewing angle is evaluated using a satellite zenith\r\n angle check; iii. A reference field comparison check is made\r\n against the Reynolds DOISSTv2 used in step B.c.; iv. A stray\r\n sunlight test is performed which requires information on whether\r\n the data in question are to left or right of nadir; v. An edge\r\n test is performed which checks the location of the pixel within\r\n a scan line and the location of the scan line within the\r\n processing piece (a 'piece' is a subset of an entire orbit\r\n file); vi. A glint test is performed which requires a glint\r\n index calculated according to the Cox and Munk (1954)\r\n formulation; vii. The preceding steps are all combined into an\r\n overall quality flag assignment for each pixel. C. Spatial\r\n Binning. Sub-steps: a. An equal-area grid is defined into which\r\n GAC pixels are binned. No external data are needed, only\r\n information on the equal-area binning strategy itself; b. A\r\n data-day is defined following a spatial data-day definition. A land mask is\r\n applied to the dataset, identifying pixels that fall on land.\r\n This land mask was generated by rasterizing the Global\r\n Self-consistent Hierarchical High-resolution Shoreline (GSHHS)\r\n Database from the NOAA National Geophysical Data Center. Any 4km\r\n Pathfinder pixel whose area is 50% or more covered by land is\r\n considered land in this land mask. Inland water bodies were\r\n incorporated into this land mask by rasterizing the US World\r\n Wildlife Fund's Global Lakes and Wetlands Database. Any 4km\r\n Pathfinder pixel whose area is 50% or more covered by lake or\r\n river was considered water for in this land mask. D. Temporal\r\n Binning. Sub-steps: a. The spatially binned pieces from step C\r\n are accumulated into a single ascending (daytime) or descending\r\n (nighttime) file for each day. These data are\r\n pulled from three different sources and interpolated to the\r\n Pathfinder Version 5.2 grid prior to processing. For 1981-2000,\r\n AVHRR Pathfinder Atmospheres (PATMOS-A2) data from the NOAA\r\n Office of Satellite Data Processing and Distribution (OSDPD) are\r\n used. For 2003-2009, AVHRR Pathfinder Atmospheres - Extended\r\n (PATMOS-X) data from NOAA OSDPD are used. For 2001-2002\r\n 2012, data are taken from the OMI/Aura Aerosol Optical Depth and\r\n Single Scattering Albedo Daily L2 Global 0.25 degree gridded\r\n v003 product (OMAEROG), produced by the US NASA Goddard Earth\r\n Sciences Data and Information Services Center; 9. Original\r\n Pathfinder quality levels are read from the HDF file, mapped to\r\n the 6 quality levels required by the GDS2.0, and written to the\r\n variable quality_level in the netCDF file.
